Mix Some Jazz And Classical With Metal

Progressive metal or sometimes known as prog metal is another subgenre of the heavy metal community. Progressive metal has features from rock, jazz, classical and metal. They the different elements combine into one genre of metal music. Prog metal bands usually have some type of jazz or classical inspiration. These genres of music were known as the backbones of progressive metal. Progressive metal less popular than the others in the metal community. But with more bands creating more progressive style of music, this could push it into mainstream.

1960 & 1970 – The Start of Progressive Metal

Back in the 1960’s and 70’s in the beginning of Progressive metal. A band named High Tide started to uses some elements from these other genres of music in their metal music. Other bands started to follow the trend. King Crimson and Rush was another band to take some of the features of other music genres and mix them. There was a start for progressive metal, but it needed someone to push it to the next level. There were three bands that could do that. Queensryche, Fates Warning and Dream Theater all had their own ideas and inspiration for progressive metal With having some inspiration of rock, jazz and classical music, this gave these three bands more edge and influence of a metal sound.

The Breakout

Progressive metal started to become more popular in the metal community in the 1990’s. When there was a release from Queensryche called Silent Lucidity that became very popular on MTV and on the radio. Other progressive bands started to come out and became more mainstream after this explosion of popularity. With the road paved now bands like Tool, Symphony X, Opeth, Threshold, Pain of Salvation and Ayreon now were getting more publicity. All these bands had their own unique style that made them a new popular progressive metal band.

Time Moves On

As time went on so did progressive metal. Conscience, Dark Suns and Disillusion started to become the new comers of progressive metal and were greatly influenced by the “fathers” of progressive metal. Most progressive metal bands have always looked up to Opeth, Tool, Pain of Salvation, Anathema and Green Carnation.

Progressive Mixed with Classical, Jazz, Rock and Metal

With some heavy metal, elements of rock, jazz and classical music will give you the building block of progressive metal. Progressive metal could be a parent to other metal genres. The most popular bands in progressive metal are Opeth and King’s X. These two bands could even be considered to be progressive death metal bands. Devin Townsend, Symphony X and Shadown Gallery are some bands that can fit in traditional progressive metal. Also watch for bands like Meshuggah, Between the Buried and Me and Pestilence which are considered to be jazz / fusion death metal.

What’s Next for Progressive Metal?

With these new bands coming into progressive metal the structure and style of the music has evolved to more shred guitars and complex music. The experimentation of this genre has been influenced by thrash, classical, jazz and even its own music and will continue to change. As the song structures become more advanced and complex, so will the riffs, beasts and talent. There is a strong future for progressive metal

Folk Metal Does Not Include Wenches And Mead

Starting in the 1990’s, Folk Metal was created by a British band called Skyclad. They used heavy metal style with foklish instruments and singing. This genre of metal music has began to go mainstream and approach the marketing. More and more bands and styles are generating more folk metal. Folk metal music news is very popular in the European market. The northern regions are where the musicians create their music and lyrics from inspiration from the tradition tales and history. A lot of folk metal style tends to fall into pagan beliefs and romanticism culture.

There is also some other styles of folk metal or subgenres of folk metal, Oriental metal, Viking metal and Celtic metal. Cruachan was a pioneer of Celtic metal when we was experimenting with folk music of Ireland and put some traditional black metal elements into the music. Primordial and Waylander help make the transition to folk metal.

Orphaned Land started making Arabic and Jewish style of folk music. This brought some media attention to the folk metal community in the early 90’s. What they created at this time was later called Oriental metal, and through time has grew to incorporate many bands and styles all distinctively drawing inspiration from the Middle East.

In the early 1990’s a Swedish band named Bathory started pioneering with flutes, clean vocals with some death metal growls into their music. This was the start of the genre Viking metal. This made Bathory style the standard for all Viking metal. Powerful ballads are combined with paganism and mythology in Viking metal. Viking themed lyrics have been enjoyed in all mainstreams and popularity of metal music. Amon Amarth has produced some of these Viking lyrics and placed them in death metal. A Swedish Viking metal band called Ensiferium has put them on top of the list for Viking metal.

Most bands that are in folk metal show strong masculinity and nationalism in their music. There are a few bands that label themselves part of the NSBM or Nationalism Socialism Black Metal. These are usually not very popular or accepted by the metal community. Most bands will have publicly denounced racism within their music because of this.

Folk metal really grabs a hold of their fans with different festivals and concerts focused on pleasing their fans. Notably Paganfest, Heathen Fest and Noctis Valkyries Metal Festival. As the genre becomes more popular, so will the festivals. They have been hosted in the cold northern lands of which they came from and starting to come over to the States.

Folk for the future has been known to be a ‘passing fad’, but not likely. There is a lot of folk metal to take in. There is esoteric nature of the music and the realms of endless possibilities. Folk metal is for casual metal listeners that have monotony breakdowns and chugs to influence today’s metal fans.

In the metal music community there are multiple branches of metal music. One of these branches is Death Metal. This is another category of heavy metal music. Inside of death metal there are other subgenres of music. Heavy metal songs with complex song structures, various tempo changes, double bass drumming, deep growling vocals and heavy distorted guitars will give you the basic building block of death metal. This was a start of a new metal music genre.

Death Metal Beginning

Most people believe that death metal came up from thrash metal. The growth of this genre started to inspire people in the mid 1980s. Celtic Frost, Slayer and Kreator were the bands that started death metal. There has been one man that has been concidered to be “the father of death metal” and that mans name is Celtic Frost. Some bands began to rise, like Possessed and Morbid Angel.

Complex Metal Music

Death Metal music usually has 5 people to a band, two guitarists, bass guitarist, drummer and singer. They all have different styles of play. The guitarists have downturned guitars and the drummer has a double bass pedal or kick drums. Fast tempo changing guitars and drums with heavy distortion and bass. The vocals often use growls, snarls and grunts. These different vocal sounds have always been a purpose of death metal’s expression of lyrical content.

Death Metal and Luciferianism

This genre of music has been known to have Satanism or antireligious meanings. People have taken the gory and violent style of death metal and assumed that they were part of Satanism worship. Death metal songs are about various topics in life, which have nothing to do with the devil. They may wright about a life experience they had. Or about love, hate or any type of emotions they might be feeling at the time.

Death Metal Categories

Here are some other sections of death metal.

Melodic

This is the same variations of the typical death metal. It has the same features and elements as death metal with more melodic singing. In Flames, At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity have expanded this to one of the most popular forms of death metal.

Technical Death Metal

This death metal has a very distinguished sound of music. They commonly have high harmonies and melodies with uncommon time signatures. Technical death metal has been known to be a break off of progressive rock and jazz / classical music. Bands that fall into this genre are Opeth, Cryptosy and Edge of Sanity.

Doom Death

You can figure out that Death Doom Metal is a combination of death and doom metal. Bands like My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and Winter have slowed the tempo, scream out a growling vocal and kept the double kick drumming going to make this a new death metal genre.

Blackened

When bands fit into either black metal or death metal, some will just call it blackened death metal. This is where Blasphemy, Zyklon and Behemoth fit into.

Deathcore Death Metal

Death core is very similar to deathgrind but more elements of death metal. The style has fast drumming, guitars and growled vocals. Job for a Cowboy, Salt the Wound and Suicide Silence continue to grow this genre of death metal music.

Where is Death Metal Going

Death metal has changed to various different genres sense the beginning. But this will only draw in new crowds and fans of death metal. Try to listen to the different styles and genres to see if any style fits you.
